The Final Sear: The Z Grills ZPG-7002E is my favorite grill in this category. Equipped with 25K BTUs of cooking power and an impressive 700 square inch cooking area, this thing is a beast. Much less than $ 500 makes it a bargain.
When it comes to pellet grills, this is a beautiful example of what a quality model should look like, especially if you're ready to smoke a lot.
The Z Grills 700 is designed for maximum versatility and ease of cooking so you can really enjoy the style you use it for, be it smoking, grilling, broiling, or baking.
With this model, I really appreciate the build quality, size, and included features. The total cooking area is a generous 700 square inches, which is quite considerable for a pellet grill. The hopper capacity is also spacious, with a capacity of up to 20 pounds (enough for about 20 hours) at a time, so it doesn't constantly recharge every time you decide to grill.
This is an 8 in 1 model, which means it is capable of grilling, broiling, smoking, chopping, braising, grilling, broiling and baking. Fan-forced convection cooking eliminates the need for a separate broiler and makes it the ideal setting for any type of cooking situation. It also gets around 25,000 BTUs per hour.
Z Grills includes a well-designed automated power supply system that maintains its heat level and produces the ideal amount of smoke – it's a sweet feature and forget it gives you a lot of freedom while cooking. The temperature range is 180 to 450 degrees and can be configured using the dial knob and the digital display.
I mentioned that this model is also really easy to use, here is why: electronic, automatic ignition, digital automatic temperature control, smart used sump designed for trouble free cleaning, and an upgraded trolley with spinning wheels lock for transport.
I also appreciate the look and build of the ZPG with the stainless steel hood and handle, the large lower trolley area for storage, and the small workspace available on top of the pellet hopper.

2. Ozark Grills: The Razorback Wood Pellet Grill and Smoker
Ozark is another favorite grill manufacturer for this category and the Razorback is a solid mid-size model.
Total cooking area is 305 square inches, large enough to accommodate approximately ten patties at a time with a hopper capacity of approximately 11 pounds.
Shares the versatility factor of the Z Grills model in our first place, allowing for a range of cooking options including slow cook, roast, bake, broil and stew. The digital readout control panel allows you to control the temperature within a range of 20 degrees, from 180 to 450 degrees. The grill grates are porcelain coated and constantly conduct heat for a pleasant and even cooking.
Ozark's temperature sensors and controls use precise controls to automatically feed the granules as needed to maintain the cooking temperature and regulate overall air flow. It also comes with an internal temperature probe to monitor what's going on inside what you're cooking, which is especially helpful when you smoke slowly and slowly.
The grease collection system is easy to empty and clean, so maintenance is fairly discreet and trouble-free.
The outer shell of the grill is heavy gauge powder coated steel with 16 gauge steel inner parts for a long lasting and durable result. The lower cart is roomy with plenty of room to store all your essentials. The wheels are solid, making it easy to move this guy around as needed.
Overall, this is an ideal size for the average family and really excels as a smoker. It is a solid choice for novice and intermediate level grills.
3. Camp Chef SmokePro XT Wood Pellet Grill Smoker
What I like most about this Camp Chef model is the upper end of the temperature range.
With these pellet smokers, you get many grills that are over 450 degrees. That's fine, but if you really want to cook a beautiful steak and end it with a nice steak, those extra 50 degrees is important. The low end also starts at 160 degrees.
Overall size is 429 comfortable square inches with good 18lb pellet hopper capacity which is perfect for almost any long smoke project. Total BTU for quick roast is 25,000 per hour and the grill grate is porcelain coated for even heat distribution.
The included features worth noting are an included internal temperature probe for meat, a top heating grill, automatic ignition, smart Smoke Technology to control heat and dispose of smoke in every bite of meat, and a simple ash cleaning system. The control panel is a dual digital LED with a control knob, which reports both the internal temperature of the meat and the cooking temperature.
Like the other two grills in our top 3, the Camp Chef will also maintain temperatures automatically, disbursing granules as needed to regulate the internal temperature of the grill.
I wish this model had a lower cart, as I generally appreciate the extra storage, but the build is solid and comes with off-road wheels for easy mobility.
Overall, this is a flavor pickguard, doing a really solid job of infusing that smoky flavor into every bite of whatever you're cooking.
If you are a fan of Z Grills, this is a great alternative to the big brother grill in our first place.
Coming as a 6-in -1 with a 450-square-inch grilling area and a collapsible work shelf for a little more prep space.
Fun features to look out for include: fan forced convection cooking (no roaster required), automatic ignition for quick starts, a cooking temperature range of 180 to 450 degrees, its automated power supply system designed to maintain internal temperatures for the duration of your cooking, and digital temperature reading.
I like the large heavy duty and horn wheels on this model and appreciate the simple ash cleaning system to keep maintenance trouble free.
This is a great smaller model if you love the grill in our first place but don't need the extra cooking area.
The Tailgater is a good smaller Traeger option with all the essentials needed for solid smoke.
Traeger considers this to be a portable smoker due to its more compact size and whereas I do not. Seeing as the easiest to transport to your favorite tailgate, you can collapse the folding legs and load it on the back of your truck. You can also use it while its legs are folded up in the bed of your truck if you want to save space.
Total grill size is 300 square inches with an included meat probe to monitor cooking temperatures and electronic ignition. Temperature accuracy is also really nice on this model and can be set in 5 degree increments to fine tune the experience.
The capacity of the pellet hopper is an average size of approximately 8 lbs.
There are many high-quality grills from the Pit Boss team and this is another great example.
One of the greats, the Classic offers 700 square inches of cooking area with a good 21-pound hopper capacity that reaches the sweet spot for long-term smoking without the need for fillers.
This is the perfect "forever grill" if you are looking for a smoker to use season after season. Features include a 180 to 500 degree cook range, electronic auto start, continuous pellet feed to meet internal temperature selection, a digital readout temperature dial, a lid mounted temperature gauge, and a construction Solid steel with powder coating.  Also includes a nice flame grill for direct heat cooking.
The bottom grill is marked for storing essentials and the heavy duty wheels make it easy to reposition and store the grill during unused seasons.
14. Pit Boss PBV3P1 Vertical Pellet Smoker
The first vertical style on our best list under $ 500, this is another great option for new fans of smokers.
Total area is 901 square inches, the largest cooking area of any pellet grill on this list, thanks to the extra space offered by the vertical design. Includes four porcelain-lined cooking grates along with a porcelain-coated water and heat baffle.
Also comes with a good size 40lb pellet hopper with a side view window for easy monitoring and bleeding function.
The temperature is fully programmable from 150 to 450 degrees and offers the standard automatic start igniter with automatic shutdown that you will find in most pellet smokers.
The ansi PBV has a digital temperature reading with LED display and a meat probe to monitor internal temperatures.
15. Traeger 10526 Bronson 20 Pellet Grill
To finish off, this sweet little compact model from Traeger.
The total size of this type is 300 square inches of cooking space, enough space to pack 2 chickens, 3 rib shelves, or 12 burgers. The capacity of the pellet hopper is approximately 10 pounds.
Features on the Bronson include the usual porcelain-coated cooking grates, 6-in-1 versatility for cooking as you like, advanced grill logic designed to keep temperatures inside the grill for perfect pellet distribution, temperature selection in 20-degree increments from 180 to 400 degrees, and self-starting electronic ignition.
The Sierra-style chassis offers plenty of stability and includes all off-road terrain wheels when you're feeling adventurous and decide to take this model on the road. It also offers an additional side handle.
This is a low-end model and has a decent feature list with a solid brand name, but we recommend it at the bottom of our list due to a variety of consumer issues that make it an unreliable artist.
